GRAND MARSHALL
SELECTED FOR NATIONAL CARNIVAL
Basseterre, St. Kitts (December 10, 2004)
The Department
of Culture has named Thomas Jeffers of Conaree as Grand Marshall
for the 2004-2005 National Carnival parade.
Jeffers, who is originally from Cayon, made his mark on the
national celebration by participating in the Cowboys and Indians
folklore group. This group enjoyed peak popularity during
the 1940’s and featured persons donning the colourful
and flashy outfits worn by Hollywood actors such as Gene Autry
and Tom Mix during their roles in “Western” films.
Mr. Jeffers reportedly won the role of Gene Autry with his
ability “to belt out a tune” and capture “the
star quality of the old western cowboy,” an official
for the Department of Culture said. The official further commended,
Mr. Jeffers for his “longstanding service” and
hailed him as an “outstanding practitioner.”
Meanwhile, folklore groups are busy preparing for carnival.
Rehearsals and performances are being staged throughout the
island to spread the Carnival and Christmas spirit.
Director of Culture Creighton Pencheon and Dance Specialist
Ava Henry met with folklore representatives to discuss their
participation in Carnival and listen to concerns of the group.
Ms. Henry described the meeting as instrumental. The groups
will be showcased on December 31 at an event dubbed Folklore
Avenue slated for Fort Street as well as the National Carnival
parade on January 1 and 3, 2005.
